Why are Hawks and Hummingbirds best friends?

While working on the first Hawk and the Hummingbird book, I learned about the real relationship between the large hawk and its tiny friend, the hummingbird. I decided that this information should be included in the first book for readers to understand the real relationship between these two very different birds.

Why are Hawks and Hummingbirds best friends?

Did you know that hawks and hummingbirds really are best friends? It is odd that a large bird and a very small bird hang out. But their lives are spent close together.
The hawk is a predator bird. Its mighty wings and sharp talons are perfect for hunting. The hummingbird is a very small, nectar-loving bird. Its body is perfectly made for visiting flowers. The hawk does not see the hummingbird as prey. That’s  because the hawk is 190 times bigger than a hummingbird!
But the hummingbird is prey to other birds like the jay, crow, and raven. It is also prey to squirrels, snakes, and chipmunks. But these hummingbird predators are prey for the hawk!
The hummingbird knows the hawk hunts his predators.  Some hummingbirds build their nests under the hawk’s nest for protection. That way, if you are the hawk’s prey, you will stay far away!
This is why hawks and hummingbirds are best friends.  That’s why Ruby goes to his friend Red for advice and protection. Red sees how beautiful the world can be through his friend Ruby’s eyes.
